Genetically modified food is unfortunately becoming more popular amongst farmers and food processors. Crops are being genetically modified to resist insects, plant diseases, insecticides and pesticides. Plants are also modified to look bigger and better. Unfortunately the end goal isn't providing nutrition for people, it's to increase profit margins and to make food look better, not necessarily be better. In fact many modern fruits and vegetables can be twice the size of what they used to be while having far less vitamins and minerals, and not tasting good either. Now research is showing that genetically modified food might even be bad for you. This article will explore why this is the case and how you can start eating in a more nutritious and healthy way.

Genetically modified organisms (both plants and animals) are organisms that have genes inserted into their DNA in order to provide certain characteristics to it. In this way you can make it bigger than normal, change the freezing temperature, make it last longer, you might have seen the mice they changed to glow in the dark. A popular thing to do is make the food resistant to pesticides. The pesticides and GM crops are often sold by the same companies such as Monsanto. Some plants have even been made to produce their own pesticides.

Jeffrey M. Smith the author of Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette has published a study about the dangers of genetically modified food. It was discovered that when genetically modified soy was fed to female rats they found that all their young died within 3 weeks compared to a natural 10% death rate. Their young were also born smaller and they later had problems becoming pregnant. A study of pigs found that they became infertile after eating genetically modified corn, some had false pregnancies and others gave birth to bags of water. Cows and bulls also became infertile after eating the same GM corn.

Many people are eating GM food without even realizing it. Common plants that are genetically modified are corn, soy, canola oil, cotton seed oil (none of which are healthy even in their natural state) and even sugar beets. The average American is currently consuming between 150 and 200 pounds of sugar per year (it is present in many processed foods and drinks) and the proportion of it that comes from GM plants is growing all the time.

Critics can argue that there have been no long term studies done on the effects GM food has on human beings while others say that is precisely the point. Besides the dangers of engineering our food sources into a patented cul-de-sac we are playing a risky game feeding GM food to people without knowing the consequences. People are currently being used as human guinea pigs to test the effects of these products.

The solution to this problem is simple. Human beings existed in their current form for hundreds of thousands of years. For most of that time we ate a diet consisting of meat, fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs and nuts. This is our optimal diet which leads us to live a healthy and long life. Fairly recently in our history we have begun eating grains, and sugars far in excess of what our body can handle. Over the last 30 years North America has experienced an obesity epidemic as well as rocketing instances of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. All due to the misinformation provided by powerful lobby groups who work on behalf of the manufacturers of GM food, producers of high-fructose corn-syrup and other processed foods. The way to avoid, obesity, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimers is by eating like our stone-age ancestors.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting information about food and nutrition I highly suggest you take a look at the Paleo Diet. It is the diet that humans naturally evolved to survive and thrive one. I've written a free introductory guide book about the Paleo Diet which you can get from my site.
